A “why” statement is powerful. It creates a personal standard to live up to. It also influences your lifestyle and the daily choices you make. Use the steps in this article to guide you as you pursue your “why”.

Step 1: Define your “Why”

“Why” statements are typically influenced by a personal definition of purpose, success or impact. A “why” is your conviction in life. It is “why” you do what you do. Some say your “why” is what you have been chosen to carry out in life, a calling. I like to think of a “why” statement as a call to action.

If you’re looking for some examples of a “why” statement, check these out...

“To help families connect better and grow together.”

“To show women that they can nurture their families, without sacrificing their personal well-being.”

“To show men that they can lead their families and still be loving.”

“To encourage others to be more organized and time efficient.”

“To help save a life every day.”

“To leave the world a better and healthier place.”

To make one person smile, every day.”

“To make my parents proud of me.”

“To honor my family's legacy.”

“To be the best version of myself.”

Step 2: Write your “Why” down

Be specific when writing your “why” statement. It should be straightforward and easy to read. Then, put your written down “why” statement somewhere it is easily seen (i.e. on the bathroom mirror or fridge door). Read this statement as much as you can, memorize it and make it apart of your life.

Step 3: Choose how you will pursue your “Why”

Your “why” should require some level of discipline. So, when choosing how to pursue your “why”, choose a practice that holds you accountable and keeps you consistent. Set long-term and short-term goals. Pivot and edit your “why” if need be. Journal to keep track of your progress. Create a reward system to keep you encouraged in pursuit of your “why”. You can also ask those closest to you for feedback on your pursuit.

Step 4: Take it day by day

Small steps create great distances. Your “why” should help guide your choices, make life meaningful and connect the steps in your life. Stay focused, give yourself grace, put your best foot forward and walk in your “why” every day!

XO,

The Kléi
