New York, New Vibes

I’m always up for an adventure, and traveling is one of my biggest passions. I love experiencing new cultures, exploring different ways of life, and checking off the destinations on my “must visit” list each year. But, if I’m being honest, New York City was never high on that list. Maybe it was the fast-paced hustle and bustle, the thought of navigating the complex transit system, or just the idea of being surrounded by so many people—whatever it was, I used to think, “I’ll be just fine if I never make it to NYC!” Haha!
But then Shariah, who loves NYC, suggested we take a trip, and I thought, “Why not? I’ll give it a shot.” To my surprise, NYC wasn’t as overwhelming as I expected—it was actually amazing! Don’t get me wrong, there was a lot happening, and the streets were packed, but I didn’t feel out of place or anxious like I thought I would. I can say, New York City is unlike anywhere else I’ve ever traveled. The iconic skyline, the vibrant streets, and the rich cultural mix—it's so much more than what you see on TV or in movies.
First Impressions:
The energy in New York is dynamic and alive—people are constantly on the move, often in a hurry, but it doesn’t feel hostile. What I really, really loved was how diverse it was. Everywhere I turned, I heard different languages, saw people from all walks of life, and witnessed the unique blend of cultures that makes NYC so special.
The Cost:
One thing to be prepared for: New York City is expensive!
Food: A casual sit-down meal will set you back about $30–$45 per person, not including drinks, tips, or taxes. If you're planning to visit trendier restaurants, expect to pay between $50 and $100 per person.
Transportation: The subway is the most budget-friendly way to get around, with a single ride costing $2.90. You can also get an unlimited ride pass if you’ll be in town for several days. While taxis and Ubers are convenient, they can be pricey, especially during rush hour.
Shopping: In my opinion, NYC has some of the best shopping! Whether you're hunting for affordable finds or high-end fashion, there's something for everyone. Just be mindful of your budget because it’s easy to splurge.
Lodging: Hotels and Airbnbs in the city can be expensive, often costing over $1,500 for just a few days. To save, we opted to stay in Newark, New Jersey, and took the NJ Transit into the city each day. While it saved us over $1,000, the 45-minute train ride made for long days. But honestly, it was worth it for the overall experience!
Attractions:
I knew a trip to New York wouldn’t be complete without seeing some of its world-famous landmarks. We spent five days in NYC, and even then, we barely scratched the surface! Here are a few of my highlights:
SUMMIT One Vanderbilt: One of NYC tallest buildings with breathtaking, unobstructed views of the New York City skyline, including iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building.
Central Park: This iconic green space is perfect for a peaceful stroll amidst the city’s hustle.
Times Square: It’s just as busy and bright as you’d expect—definitely a sensory overload, but definitely a must see!
The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met): One of the world’s largest and most famous art museums - a must-visit for art lovers.
The Apollo Theater: Known for launching the careers of legendary Black artists, the Apollo is a cultural gem that celebrates African American talent.
We didn’t have time to catch a Broadway show, but it’s definitely something to plan for next time. If you’re a theater fan, consider checking out TKTS for discounted same-day tickets!
What to Pack for NYC:
Packing for New York can was a little tricky for me, but these essentials will make your trip much smoother:
Comfortable shoes: NYC is a walking city, and you’ll be on your feet all day. Bring supportive and comfortable shoes.
Weather-appropriate clothing: The weather in New York can be unpredictable, so pack layers! If you're visiting in winter, bring a warm coat, hat, and waterproof boots. For summer, light, breathable clothing is key.
Portable phone charger: You’ll rely on your phone for navigation, photos, and more. A portable charger is a lifesaver. I had to used mine almost every day.
Small backpack or crossbody bag: Perfect for carrying essentials like water, snacks, and your camera.
Reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated, especially while walking.
Camera or phone with plenty of storage: You’ll want to capture every moment—from the skyline to street performers, so be sure you have room in your phone to save your memories!
Final Tips for Your First NYC Adventure:
Plan ahead: While wandering is fun, a loose itinerary will help you avoid getting overwhelmed. Make a list of must-see attractions and work your days around those specific things.
Budget carefully: NYC can get expensive fast, so it’s important to set a budget for meals, attractions, and shopping. Bring cash for tips and small purchases, too.
Stay alert: Like any big city, NYC is generally safe but can be hectic. Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded spots like Times Square or the subway.
In the end, my first trip to New York City was an unforgettable success. Although I was worried it might be overwhelming, it turned out to be one of the most exciting cities I’ve ever visited. I’ll definitely be back to explore even more!
