We’re so trained to go, go, go and look at rest as a reward but rest is not a reward – it’s a necessity. Incorporating rest consistently into your life will actually improve your overall performance – not decline it. Read about these 5 types of rest for the next time you're feeling fatigued.

Social Rest: Surrounding yourself with positive social interactions that lead to stronger, more fulfilling relationships.

How to Achieve

  • Stop hanging out with people who leave you feeling drained and depleted.

  • Do not over commit yourself to social activities.

  • Surround yourself with people who improve your outlook on life.

Emotional Rest: This is all about being able to express your emotions in healthy ways.

How to Achieve:

  • Seek help/guidance/advice when facing challenging situations.

  • Read books about emotional intelligence and apply what you’ve learned.

  • Speak up! Remember how you feel and what you think matters – at all times and in every relationship.

Mental Rest: We are constantly receiving information, processing thoughts, and making important decisions throughout our daily lives – think of mental rest as a mind break from all of these activities.

How to Achieve:

  • Take small breaks throughout your day.

  • Meditate.

  • Have a creative outlet.

Physical Rest: Think of this as making time for physical restoration in response to life’s daily physical demands.

How to Achieve:

  • Schedule and stick to a sleep schedule.

  • Go for a daily walk.

  • Stretch after you wake up or before you go to bed.

Sensory Rest: It is important to give your senses a break. Taking a break from constant sensory input can help improve your focus and reduce stress.

How to Achieve:

  • Dim the lights.

  • Get comfortable in quietness.

  • Set time limits on social apps and screen time.

A Quick Way to Gauge if You Need Rest:

  • Feeling detached from others

  • Unemotional

  • Burnt out

  • Easily irritable

  • Have experienced recent weight loss or weight gain

  • Feel ill/sick

  • Tired/drowsy

By prioritizing different types of rest, we can recharge our bodies and minds, leading to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Remember, rest is not a reward but a necessity for our well-being, so let's embrace all the ways we can rest and recharge to live our best lives!
