Summer is usually a time of the year that’s filled with sunshine, vacations, and spending more time with our loved ones. But, not only is the summer season a time for memories and loved ones, it’s the perfect season to refresh your body and take advantage of the sun’s benefits! Here are four wellness facts that the summer season offers us:
1. More opportunities for outdoor exercise:
Did you know skin is the biggest organ of the body?
Contrary to popular belief, sun exposure is healthy for our skin (in moderation of course)!
When we get out and get sun exposure, our bodies produce more vitamin D. Vitamin D is instrumental in maintaining a healthy heart and healthy blood vessels. With that, the summer season is the perfect time of year to do activities like meditating, walking, running, cycling, hiking, swimming, ect. - outdoors! ***Be sure to choose the right SPF and reapply sunscreen throughout the day.
2. Increase natural happiness and overall well-being:
Did you know that just by being outside you can improve your mood and mental well-being?
There’s a great connection between being in nature and our mental health. The Summer season is the perfect time to start (or continue) practicing mindfulness, relaxation techniques, and/or meditation outdoors to promote a positive mind and body. By embracing the sun in the summer season, we also allow ourselves to have an increase in the natural production of serotonin (our body's natural mood stabilizer and happiness chemical)!
3. Hydration:
Did you know up to 60% of our bodies are water?
The summer season is the perfect time to explore creative ways to stay hydrated! Try things like:
Making homemade popsicles:
Make your own fruit popsicles using fresh fruit juice or pureed fruits. This is a fun and delicious way to stay hydrated while enjoying a cool treat!
Making smoothies:
Blend together fresh fruits, vegetables, and yogurt to create hydrating and nutritious smoothies, add some ice for an extra cooling effect.
Eating more water-rich/water based fruits:
Snack on water-rich fruits like watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and berries. These fruits not only provide hydration but also essential vitamins and minerals!
Infusing your water:
Infusing your water with fruits, herbs, and vegetables not only adds flavor, but can encourage you to drink more water throughout the day.
Here’s to prioritizing your wellness and taking advantage of the summer season!
